Agriculture
The vision is for the NCER to become a modern food zone for Malaysia, helping the country to increase its efficiency in food production. This will include encouraging commercial-scale farming, thereby dramatically increasing the productivity of paddy farming (e.g. through better seeds, irrigation and organisation), leveraging on unutilised land for the farming of new crops and livestock farming, and venturing into agriculture downstream activities. A number of outcomes are targeted by 2012:
- Increasing agricultural exports from RM32 billion to RM48 billion
- Increasing paddy yields from 4 tonnes per hectare to 8 tonnes per hectare
- Increasing average profit per hectare of cultivated land1 to RM10,000 per hectare per annum
- Increasing the amount of agricultural land utilised from around 800,000 hectares to 1 million hectares
