The NCER is strategically located within the IMT-GT and is adjacent to the Eastern Corridor. Leveraging this advantage, the vision is for the NCER to be a major processing centre and entrepot port. The NCER will tap into produce farmed and goods manufactured in the hinterland, which may be processed in the NCER and shipped out through Penang Port. Additionally, feeder services from Thailand and Sumatera to Penang Port will be encouraged in order to promote the port as a regional transhipment centre. The target is to increase the cargo processed at Penang Port from 770,000 TEUs in 2005 to 1 million1 TEUs by 2012.
