Strategic Projects Towards Sustainable Agriculture Development in NCER
Certified organic paddy hub is an initiative to catalyse organic paddy industry through establishment of Centre of Excellence (COE) for integrated organic training towards potential farmers. The nucleus hub has been identified in Sik district, Kedah. The COE has been endorsed by Kedah State, and is known as Institut Pengurusan Pertanian Organik Bersepadu Kedah Darul Aman (INSPEK).
Development of nucleus seed hub in Barat Daya district, Pulau Pinang for oyster is an initiative to promote premium aquaculture products by NCER. This initiative will create new entrepreneurs and satellite farmers for oyster grow-out within NCER. Three satellite hubs have been identified are located in Kuala Muda, Kedah, Seberang Perai Selatan, Pulau Pinang and Manjung,Perak.
Estate Management Model (EMM) Paddy
The Estate Management Model (EMM) leverages on the usage of innovative mechanisms and modern activities to improve the yield of rice. These initiatives raise agricultural productivity and increase farmers’ income, allowing them access to advance technologies and high-quality seeds to strengthen the cultivation of crops in NCER.
Superfruit initiative aims at strengthening superfruits industry in Malaysia especially within the NCER vicinity, and also promoting entrepreneurship elements based on anchor company business model. Currently, the 25 ha Superfruits Valley in Chuping, operated by FigDirect Sdn Bhd, produced figs, lemon and gac, marketed as fresh produce and extensive downstream products. Two satellite Farms have been identified namely in Padang Terap, Kedah & Manjung,Perak.
This initiative is the first commercial-scale of abalone cultivation in Peninsular Malaysia which is located in Manjung, Perak. The initiative will boost the local economy by offering at least 30 job opportunities, creating 10 synergy farmers and producing 5 million abalone seeds by 2021.
