NCER Priority Sectors

Petrochemical

A HIGH POTENTIAL INDUSTRY FOR THE NORTHERN REGION

NCER has an abundant feedstock supply of natural gas and is already home to existing petrochemical and chemical players, mainly in Gurun, Kedah and Prai, Pulau Pinang. One of the key players in this sector is PETRONAS, Malaysia’s leading oil and gas company.

This significant industry creates downstream products to be supplied to other industries such as manufacturing, ranging from automotive to electronics, and textiles to pharmaceuticals.

An important project to drive this sector in NCER is the development of the Kedah Eco Innovation Park (KEIP) in Gurun. Once completed, KEIP will produce downstream products and specialty chemicals such as bio-based petrochemicals by leveraging on raw materials from the existing ecosystem within the Gurun area.

With its close proximity to the region’s robust infrastructure comprising the North- South Expressway, natural gas pipeline, railway connectivity and seaport, KEIP is expected to transform the economic landscape of Kedah.
