TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE

NCER has excellent transportation infrastructure connecting all major growth and industrial areas for smooth movement of goods within the region and to the international market.

The region has seen positive growth in trade and logistics activities through various infrastructure investments, as reflected in the figures below.

In 2010, the Penang Port underwent an upgrade.

In 2012, Penang Airport has been upgraded.

The Penang Second Bridge, also known as The Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge, has been completed in 2014.

The completion of Double Rail Track took place in the year 2015.

The Komuter Service was introduced in 2015.

In 2015, the ETS service has been extended.

The completion of Penang Sentral took place in the year 2018.

In 2018, Langkawi International Airport has been upgraded.

The completion of West Coast Expressway (WCE) took place in the year 2018.

Investors who are interested to participate in this industry can consider the following opportunities which will focus on resolving rail bottlenecking issues and improving inter- and intra-region connectivity to ensure that NCER becomes a more efficient and dynamic regional player.

Land Connectivity

Strategic projects will be undertaken to enhance land connectivity across the region, covering roads and highways, railway and logistics hubs. Examples of such projects include the Northern Corridor Highway, Kota Perdana Special Border Economic Zone, Perlis Inland Port and Padang Besar Sentral development.

Air Connectivity

NCER is easily accessible by air from various parts of the world with the presence of two international airports (Langkawi International Airport and Penang International Airport) and two domestic airports (Sultan Azlan Shah Airport and Sultan Abdul Halim Airport).

Under the new strategic development plan, the Penang International Airport and the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport will be expanded. A new project known as Kedah Aerotropolis will be developed, encompassing Kulim International Airport (KXP) and the Sidam Logistics, Aerospace and Manufacturing Hub (SLAM).

Sea Connectivity

With its strategic location facing the Straits of Malacca, NCER also offers excellent sea connectivity via Penang Port and Lumut Maritime Terminal. Penang Port will be expanded to increase its capacity, while a new passenger terminal will be developed in Kuala Perlis to improve passenger movement to Pulau Langkawi.
